Staring down the tracks at my mid-50s as the next stop, after nearly 25 years riding this oncology-service Ferris wheel, the light is only getting brighter for me; it’s about the people we serve as humans. Those of us chosen to work in this space, serving people and families in time of need, it pays dividends to our hearts. We work very hard and rarely get, and never expect, flowers for it. In numerology, 43 represents relationships and love, stability, security, and commitment. That’s the inspiration of this company.

Many of us here have spent our careers in this space. The scars gained in working for bad businesses, businesses focused on Wall Street stock prices, personal commissions, or current-quarter gain. We acknowledge those lessons and we’re thankful for them.

What we’ve created here is a group of people whose hearts are in the right place. Our charter will not be compromised; our chosen employee criteria begins and ends with this sentiment. We serve this community and our partners as if their, your, or a member of our family were in that vault being treated for cancer on these machines.

When that bell rings at the end of a patient graduating the radiation treatment process, when clinical teams realize that we are also marching toward that same sound, when those families’ members hug our engineers, that’s our reward. That’s why we were chosen to be in this arena fighting cancer.

About Me: Walter Eric Bergman

The number 43 found me 30 years ago when I arrived in San Diego, CA after leaving Vail, CO with a youthful enthusiasm. I landed in Pacific Beach and, before food, I bought a used beach-cruiser bicycle. Distressed yellow, good tires, plenty of rust: it had a faded white #43 race number painted on the front of the frame. It wasn’t fast, it was light years from perfect, it was me. I’d arrived. The meaning of those words is more important to me now than that bike was then. I’ve arrived.

Faith. I have three heroes: my two daughters and David Goggins. 4x Ironman Triathlon, 10x marathon, traveled a good chunk of the globe; Jerusalem and St. John, USVI rank at the top. Ski instructor and coach of many sports and kids. Surfing is spiritual. Sushi in Japan and sunsets in Rio are, too. Babies are a blessing and dogs are magic (my furry baby is a Cane Corso named Lily-Baby). I live my life caring for and giving hope and joy to others. I believe egos are best left in the junk drawer. I have a tattoo that says, ‘out of many … one’, which to me means what I think humanity should mean to more. Truth, honor, love, and righteousness is my final finish line that matters most.

43 Oncology is very special. And it’s very important to all of us because we do know that we play an important part in serving those that need help.
